Hemingway

WAR AND HEMINGWAY HERO IN THE WRITER'S FICTION AND JOURNALISM

The feature which characterizes Ernest Hemingway as a good writer is his capability of using experience as a thing, by means of which, he can present himself as a creative writer. Henry Thoreau went to live in the woods and to confront only the essential facts of life. Hemingway, just like Thoreau, went to Europe to take part in the greatest military conflicts which spread over Europe. He spent only some years of his life face to face with bare essentials of existence and nature. This kind of a direct confrontation with life and war was the origin of the writer's war fiction and journalism. He was firmly engaged in his times and felt connected with his generation, with the rest of the world involved in the wars.

Experiencing the wars himself, he worked on recording the war phenomena and people in his journalism and fiction. He wrote many reports touching upon the problem of suffering of the civilian population and the absurdity of the war itself. He described the procession of refugees escaping besieged cities, bombing of the towns and killing innocent people. That is why his reports constitute a certain period of time in the history of mankind recorded as if they were films from those days. The reports present complicated problems of the individual's function in the war and his suffering, but they do it in a simple and clear way.

The war fiction also grows out of his own ordeals during World War I and the Spanish Civil War. Writing the short stories: "IN OUR TIME" and the novel "A FAREWELL TO ARMS", Hemingway describes the existence of people in the wartime, life that becomes meaningless in the face of war and death, life that is devoid of all moral values. Life during World War I causes loss of faith, destructive passiveness and nihilism. Thus, all virtues and abstract notions lose their meaning and become empty notions. This is the background on which Hemingway hero appears. However, it turns out that man is only a victim of violent, ruthless reality.

Hemingway hero is sensitive, young, moeally destructed and suffering. He does not know where he belongs and thus he he tries to find his identity in the war reality. This is the reason why he changes slightly from passiveness to activity and becomes self - reliant. Violence and death are the obsessions of the war heroes of Hemingway fiction from those days. That's why they become morally distorted till the end and fail, finally. Death which is inextricably mixed with war cannot be ignored or conqured - they finally believe in it.

Ernest's "Spanish experiences" are included in his novel "FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS". The world in the novel is also dominated by war and death, but it is a different kind of domination. This war is full of ideals that are worth dying for. The war in "FWBT" is also merciless and destructive, but does not destroy a human being as far as his morality is concerned. The main character of the novel is slightly different. He wants to live, but does not look desperately for escaping the war. He is strong and conscious of the importance of the ideals he fights and dies for.

The writer's war journalism is written in a clear, factual style. The reports show carefully selected vocabulary with no cliches, euphemisms or superfluous adjectives. He wrote for the "KANSAS CITY STAR", the "TABULA", the "TRAPEZE"... . He took part in four military operations and wrote many, many moving reports. His reports show grim, violent and ruthless principles that govern people's lives. War is always the same in its principles; it always destructs and causes suffering.

Ernest Hemingway created the psychological studium of man's moral crises, his inner fight and inward change. He showed man's transformation and presented the world dominated by war and death. However, let us not forget that Hemingway is also the author of such great works as "THE SUN ALSO RISES" or "THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA".
